6th NEWVA Poll Released

The New England Women's Volleyball Association has released its sixth Regional Poll. Umass Boston holds onto the top spot while Bowdoin moves into a tie with Springfield for 2nd. Wellesley was this week's big mover as they jumped from 12th to 8th following a 3-1 win over Springfield.

This Week in New England-Oct 19th Edition

Things are going well for New England volleyball teams. Three teams are in the national poll: #17 UMass Boston, #20 Springfield, and #25 Bowdoin with Tufts receiving votes as well. UMass Boston junior middle hitter Shannon Thompson was named the AVCA National Player of the Week. Last week, Southern Vermont's Jessica Alvarez was the AVCA National Player of the Week. The are a number of key match ups this week, especially with the Hall of Fame Tournament this weekend (co-hotsed by Smith and Mount Holyoke). Springfield and Bowdoin will face off on Friday night to definitively break that tie at the #2 spot in the NEWVA poll. Can Wellesley pull another upset when they face UMass Boston tonight? Coast Guard faces Trinity and Conn College for bragging rights as the top team in the Nutmeg State. And, Southern Vermont looks to continue its dominance in the NECC with a match against Lesley.

More 20-win teams

Last weekend, UMass Boston won the MIT Quad Tournament to improve to 21-2. They have won 21 straight matches since dropping their first two matches of the year to Division II University of Hawaii Hilo. (Update: they won their 22nd on 10/18/11 vs West Conn, 3-0). MIt also reached the 20-win mark with a 3-0 over Wheaton on Oct 18th to improve to 20-7. The following teams enter the week within reach of the 20-win mark: Bowdoin, Tufts, Coast Guard, Wellesley, and Plymouth State.

20-win Teams

Springfield (17-0), Southern Vermont (18-2), and Roger Williams (19-3) all have a shot at reaching the 20-win mark this weekend. Springfield hosts Plymouth State, SUNY New Paltz, Westfield State, and Stevens Tech in the Tom Hay Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Southern Vermont travels to SUNY Cobleskill on Thursday before hosting Newbury in an NECC match on Saturday. Roger Williams hosts the Little Rhody Championship on Sunday where they will play Rhode Island College and either Salve Regina or Johnson & Wales.
Update: Springfield improves to 21-0 with a 5-0 week but Plymouth State pushed them to the limit in a five-setter on Friday night. Southern Vermont wins both matches this week by 3-0 scores and improves to 20-2. Roger Williams goes finished off a 3-0 week with 3-1 wins over Rhode Island College and Salve Regina to improve to 21-3.

New Look

In case you didn't notice. We got a fresh new design. We still have plenty of room for improvement so send any suggestions to newvad3@gmail.com. Most of the committees have been updated to reflect new representation as well.

Second NEWVA Poll Released

UMass Boston remains the top team in the New England Women's Volleyball Association Regional Poll. Springfield, Coast Guard, and MIT represent the NEWMAC in spots two through four. The NESCAC places seven teams in the next nine spots. Poll
